Tuning for your label printing machine
Start each print job from pole position
SENSOTEC register controls ensure an optimum print result in multicolour printing for a wide variety of label substrates, some of which can behave unpredictably. Thanks to high-precision sensor technology, the register controls detect the print marks precisely at all times and control the multicolour print with optimum register accuracy. Even with low-contrast mark patches so that the individual colours and surface finishes with a wide variety of materials match each other with absolute accuracy during narrow-web label printing. Thanks to the permanent, digital, adaptive register control from SENSOTEC, you achieve outstanding print quality and better utilisation of material, machine and personnel. This makes the SENSOTEC register control a profitable investment in the future of your production.

How does a register control work and what is it good for?
Everybody encounters labels every day, whether on consumer products such as beverage bottles, food or care products, but labels can also be found in medicine, the automobile and many other areas. Many technically demanding and high-quality labels cannot be produced on digital presses. Particularly when it comes to imprinting processes where, for example, gold is applied or contours are to be created. This requires analogue machines and, in particular, narrow-web label presses. These machines were historically developed from letterpress machines and work according to the same principle with so-called printing cylinders. Each printing unit has such cylinders which guide the medium to be printed (the film, called substrate in technical circles) through the machine and produce the print image in conjunction with the corresponding printing cylinders and the ink. Each printing unit, also known as a register, prints a different colour or creates an imprint, depending on the print job and thus on the configuration of the press. To ensure that the later product, i.e. the film, meets the quality requirements of the customer and ultimately us consumers, it is important that the printing units are precisely coordinated and that each printing unit prints where it should.
Each substrate has different physical properties and reacts differently to heat, cold and forces (tension and compression). In addition, there is also the property of how well the substrate can be driven on a cylinder, the so-called slip is decisive here. In addition, the high stress on the machine can also lead to mechanical deviations. All this can lead to deviations between the printing units without monitoring and control of the process.
To counteract these influencing factors, the register control system is an appropriate solution.
The loop of a register
Each printing unit has a light reflection sensor installed that detects the register marks on the substrate. These marks are located at the edge of the substrate, the so-called mark field, and are printed during the ongoing process. The original structure of these mark fields is fixed, resulting in fixed distances between the marks.
Since the substrate itself is often subject to a certain elasticity and can expand and contract due to heat and cold - caused by the process - deviations from the fixed distances occur during printing. These distances are continuously recorded in the process by the sensors in interaction with the reading units. The sensor data collected in the reading units is forwarded to the control system and processed there. From the possible deviations of the distances, the software calculates the necessary adjustment commands for the drives of the press cylinders. Depending on the version of the press, these commands are sent directly to the motors or to the respective press control. Depending on the transmitted value, the press cylinder is operated faster or slower. The extremely fast, continuous monitoring of the distances and equally fast permanent readjustment of the press cylinders guarantees a high degree of consistent print quality and prevents rejects.
Special label printing applications can be realised with SENSOTEC register controls, such as double-sided printing, insetting, presetting, etc.
